When Is a Roof Unsuitable for Solar Panels?

Direction: north-facing roofs
A roof facing firmly north is the most common genuine limitation. Because the sun tracks across the southern sky, a north-facing slope receives far less daylight and generates too little to justify the cost on its own. South is ideal, and east or west-facing roofs produce only around 15% less and are well worth it — but north alone usually does not stack up. Heavy shading
A roof shaded for much of the day — by tall trees, neighbouring buildings or large chimneys — can disappoint even if it faces the right way, because shading disproportionately reduces output. Optimisers and micro-inverters mitigate partial shade, and a clever layout helps, but a roof in near-permanent shadow may simply not generate enough. Roof condition and age
Panels are designed to stay put for 25 years or more, so the roof beneath them needs to be sound for the long haul. You can still fit a smaller system, and even a modest array can be worthwhile, but it is worth being realistic about how many panels will genuinely fit in good positions rather than squeezing some into poor ones.
Structure and materials
Most roofs comfortably carry a domestic array, but some structures need extra thought. Very old or unusual roof timbers, certain lightweight or fragile coverings, and some flat-roof constructions may require a structural check or specialist mounting. A roof can be physically perfect yet constrained by planning rules — for instance on a listed building or a prominent slope in a conservation area. - A different roof plane — a south, east or west-facing slope elsewhere on the property, or a garage or outbuilding roof.
